What we desire
I have been working on a project titled 'Figures from Complaint,' which depicts my grievances about various social phenomena. New incidents have erupted in society time and time again, and I have expressed my dissatisfaction with each of them through my work. Eight years have passed since I began this project, and I have come to observe that the very aspects of society that I have criticized through my work are repeating themselves, albeit in a slightly different form. This has led me to ponder how to portray these issues in a new and innovative light. Additionally, I have realized that if I continue to focus on these recurring phenomena, I will be limited to producing works that merely rehash the same old themes. At the same time, I have become curious about the root causes of the myriad problems facing our society. As a result, I have decided to shift my focus in future projects to exploring the fundamental underlying causes of the social phenomena I wish to portray.
So, the theme chosen for this exhibition is "desire." In the dictionary, desire is defined as "a feeling of longing to possess or enjoy something due to a sense of lack, or such a feeling." It is the attraction of the mind that manifests in all the values that humans pursue. Desire appears in various forms, such as sexual desire, appetite, desire for honor, desire for sleep, greed, and desire for power. It could be said that many problems that occur in society ultimately stem from the clash between these desires.
The works that make up the exhibition are those that focus on expressing these various forms of desire. The works were approached with the thought of what kind of desire modern people's social problems are based on, and as a result, the desire for competition and survival, and fusion and balance between people, took center stage. Based on this, I have come to the conclusion that most of the problems our society has stem from the insecurity of relationships between people. I would like to share my thoughts on how this insecurity we have manifests itself in society, why it takes such a form, and how we can fix such phenomena with the audience through this exhibition.
